Mahler 5 is so tricky to bring off well, but I found this performance convincing, and for once, the finale worked for me, making the symphony a coherent whole. The Berliners play with a dark lustre, and as so often with Rattle, I sense how much he has thought and felt about every note- the emotional tensions are brought off beautifully.
